Research Highlights

To illustrate the wide field of research conducted in the Stieltjes Institute, in this chapter a research 'highlight' from each of the four main areas is presented.

For Algebra and Geometry, J. van Mill, professor of Mathematics at the Free University at Amsterdam and permanent staff member of the programme `Topology' has contributed a paper on `Function Spaces and the Topology of Pointwise Convergence'.

For Analysis, E.M. Opdam, professor of Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam and permanent staff member of the programme `Lie Theory and Classical Analysis' discusses `Representation Theory of Algebraic Groups'.

Stochastics is represented by F.M. Dekking, professor of Statistics at the Delft University of Technology and permanent staff member of the programma `Probability' with a paper named `Markov Chains and Geology'.

For Operations Research such a highlight is `Heavy Tails and Queues' by O.J. Boxma, professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology as well as project leader at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science at Amsterdam. Professor Boxma is a permanent staff member of the programme `Stochastic Operations Research'.
