Stieltjes Prize

Each year a Stieltjes Prijs (Stieltjes Prize) is awarded for the best Ph.D. thesis in the Stieltjes Institute during that year. It consists of a certificate and an amount of 2,500 Dutch Guilders.


Winner 1996
The first Stieltjes Prize has been awarded to Dr. M.H. Wegkamp for his dissertation Entropy methods in statistical estimation (June 26, 1996, Leiden University, The Netherlands). On March 11, 1998, during the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Stieltjes Institute, the Rector Magnificus of Leiden University has presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 2,500 Dutch Guilders to Dr. Wegkamp.


Winner 1997
The Stieltjes Prize for 1997 has been awarded to Dr. J.A. van Hamel for his dissertation Algebraic cycles and topology of real algebraic varieties (May 26, 1997, Free University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands). On November 19, 1999, he has received the prize from the Rector Magnificus of the Free University.


Winner 1998
The Stieltjes Prize for 1998 has been awarded to Dr. J.V. Stokman for his dissertation Multivariable orthogonal polynomials and quantum Grassmannians (June 11, 1998, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Also on November 19, 1999, he has received the prize from the Rector Magnificus of the Free University.


Winner 1999
The Stieltjes Prize for 1999 has been awarded to Dr. N.R. Bruin for his dissertation Chabauty methods and covering techniques applied to generalised Fermat equations (October 6, 1999, Leiden University, The Netherlands). On June 8, 2000, he has received the prize from the Chairman of the Board of the Stieltjes Institute.
