Programme leaders: P.J. van der Houwen, M.N. Spijker
The programme concerns the construction, analysis and implementation of numerical methods for solving mathematical problems. The research ranges from fundamental to more applications oriented. Specific topics studied in the programme comprise the numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations, approximation theory and implementational aspects of numerical algorithms for modern computer architectures. Although these subareas are different in nature, there is a strong interaction between these fields of research.
The topics studied in the programme belong to the main themes within contemporary numerical analysis. Accordingly, the researchers in the programme have many international contacts with numerical analysis research groups abroad. The mathematical tools used in the analysis of the numerical methods are related to many other parts of mathematics (operator theory, complex analysis and the theory of differential equations).
