In the series `Research Highlights' from the Stieltjes Institute I would rather like to present a `Sidelight'. This refers to the fact that in the following I will not discuss exciting new developments in mathematics per se, but an application of simple mathematics to problems posed by an engineer, Amro Elfeki. A large number of sometimes heated discussions have led to a joint paper which will appear this year in the journal Mathematical Geology.
