Stieltjes Prize



Each year a "Stieltjes Prijs" (Stieltjes Prize) will be given to the Stieltjes student with the best Ph.D. thesis. It consists of a certificate and an amount of 1200 Euros.

    Dr. Peter van Heijster is the winner of the Stieltjes prize 2009 with his dissertation "Front Interactions in a Three-Component System" (May 26, 2009, University of Amsterdam). On October 8, 2010, there was a Stieltjes afternoon at Leiden University. Van Heijster was one of the speakers and there he received the Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 euros from by Prof.mr. Paul van der Heijden, Rector Magnificus and Chairman of Leiden University.

    Philip Eijlander (l) and Hermen Jan Hupkes (r)
    Dr. Hermen Jan Hupkes is the winner of the Stieltjes prize 2008 with his dissertation "Invariant Manifolds and Applications for Functional Differential Equations of Mixed Type" (June, 12, 2008, Leiden University). On September 17, 2009, there was a Stieltjes afternoon at Tilburg University. Hupkes was one of the speakers and there he received the Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros from Prof.dr. Philip Eijlander, Rector Magnificus of the Tilburg University.

    The Stieltjes prize for 2007 has been awarded to dr. J.H.M. Anderluh for his dissertation ``Probabilistic methods in exotic option pricing''. (May 21, 2007, Delft University of Technology). On March 5, 2009, Prof.dr.L. Bouter, Rector Magnificus of Vrije Universteit Amsterdam, presented the Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to him.



  • Winner 2006
    The Stieltjes prize for 2006 has been awarded to dr. A.B. Dieker for his dissertation ``Extremes and Fluid Queues''. (March 9, 2006, University of Amsterdam). On June 30, 2008, the Rector Magnificus of the Delft University of Technology, Prof. dr. ir. J. T. Fokkema presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to him.

  • Winner 2005
    The Stieltjes prize for 2005 has been awarded to dr. A. Dall'Acqua for her dissertation "Higher Order Elliptic Problems and Positivity". (June 24, 2005, Delft University of Technology). On September 14, 2006, the Rector Magnificus and chairman of Leiden University, Prof.dr. D.D. Breimer presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to her.
     
  • Winner 2004
    The Stieltjes prize for 2004 has been awarded to dr. M.H. van Raalte for his dissertation "Multigrid Analysis and Embedded Boundary Conditions for Discontinuous Galerkin Discretization". (December 6, 2004, University of Amsterdam). On September 15, 2005, the Director of the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam, prof.dr. J.K. Lenstra presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to him.
     
  • Winner 2003
    The Stieltjes prize for 2003 has been awarded to dr. P.H. van der Kamp for his dissertation "Integrable Evolution Equations: a Diophantine Approach". (January 9, 2003, Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam). On January 13, 2005, the Rector Magnificus of the Tilburg University, prof.dr. F.A. van der Duyn Schouten presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to him.

    The Stieltjes prize for 2002 has been awarded to dr. N. Litvak for her dissertation "Collecting n Items Randomly Located on a Circle". (January 22, 2002, Eindhoven University of Technology). On October 16, 2003, the Rector Magnificus of the Eindhoven University of Technology, prof.dr. R.A. van Santen presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to her.
     
  • Winner 2001
    The Stieltjes prize for 2001 has been awarded to dr. J.M. Peng for his dissertation "New design and analysis of interior point methods". (June 20, 2001, Delft University of Technology ). On February 12, 2003, the former Rector Magnificus of the University of Amsterdam, Prof.dr J.J.M. Franse presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 1200 Euros to him.
     
  • Winner 2000
    The Stieltjes prize for 2000 has been awarded to dr. G.J.B. van den Berg for his dissertation "Dynamics and equilibria of fourth order differential equations" (December 14, 2000, University of Leiden Netherlands). On September 17, 2001, the Rector Magnificus of the Delft University of Technology, Prof.dr.ir. K.F. Wakker presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 2500 Dutch Guilders to him.
     
  • Winner 1999
    The Stieltjes prize for 1999 has been awarded to dr. N.R. Bruin for his dissertation "Chabauty methods and covering techniques applied to generalised Fermat equations" (October 6 1999, University of Leiden Netherlands). On June 8, 2000, the Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 2500 Dutch Guilders were presented to him.
     
  • Winner 1998
    The Stieltjes prize for 1998 has been awarded to dr. J.V. Stokman for his dissertation "Multivariable Orthogonal Polynomials and Quantum Grassmannians"" (June 11,1998, University of Amsterdam,Netherlands).On November 19, 1999, the Rector Magnificus of the Free University, Prof.dr.ir. T. Sminia presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 2500 Dutch Guilders to him.
     
  • Winner 1997
    The Stieltjes prize for 1997 has been awarded to dr. J.A. van Hamel for his dissertation "Algebraic cycles and topology of real algebraic varieties" (May 26,1997, Free University of Amsterdam, Netherlands). On November 19, 1999, the Rector Magnificus of the Free University, Prof.dr.ir. T. Sminia presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 2500 Dutch Guilders to him.
     
  • Winner 1996
    The first Stieltjes prize (for 1996) has been awarded to dr. Marten H. Wegkamp for his dissertation "Entropy Methods in Statistical Estimation" (June 26, 1996, Leiden University, Netherlands). On March 11, 1998, during the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Stieltjes Institute, the Rector Magnificus of Leiden University, Prof.dr. W.A. Wagenaar presented this Stieltjes certificate and the amount of 2500 Dutch Guilders to Dr. Wegkamp.
